Double Gold Medal - 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition Pontarlier is an ancient trade-route city situated near the Swiss frontier in the Eastern French region called the Jura. Pontarlier gained the reputation as the preeminent absinthe-producing region in the world and was knowns as its Belle Epoque capital. The Emile Pernot distillery was founded as a small family-run business in 1890 at the height of absinthes popularity. >c After the 1915 French ban; it survived and continued by producing other local liquor specialties. >c Today it is one of only two working distilleries left of the 22 that thrived during Pontarliers absinthe years. Vieux Pontarlier 65 Absinthe is carefully crafted in small batches using alambic stills that were specifically designed to make absinthe. >c This historic spirit is distilled using locally grown wormwood; considered to be the finest in the world; along with green anise seed and a variety of additional aromatic herbs and spices. >c No sweetener of any kind is added; creating a refreshing taste obtained entirely from the combination of plants and the distillers skills.
